THEME of the Photo Contest is Striving for a Sustainable Future.

ABOUT USIEF

USIEF (formerly USEFI) is a bi-national Fulbright Commission, and EducationUSA Advising Center affiliated to the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational & Cultural Affairs (ECA).

TERM

The International Education Week 2010 Photography Contest begins October 25, 2010 at 5:00 p.m. Indian Standard Time and ends November 8, 2010 at 12:00 midnight Indian Standard Time. By submitting an entry, each entrant agrees to the Official Rules that his or her entry complies with all requirements set out in the Official Rules.

WHO MAY ENTER

Contest is open only to individuals between the ages of 15-25 years (25 years as on December 31, 2010), and residing in Western India, viz. the states of Maharashtra, Goa, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Chhatisgarh, and the Union Territories Daman & Diu and Dadra & Nagar Haveli.

HOW TO ENTER

Each entry consists of a single image, and an entry form. To enter, visit http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/LB9YYWX; complete an entry form with the required information, including your name, address, telephone number, cell number, email address, and photo caption. After submitting the form through Survey Monkey, email your photograph (one entry per person) as an attachment to usiefmumbai@gmail.com. In the subject line mention "IEW 2010 Photo Contest". The body of the email should have your full name, cell number and caption (the same caption as mentioned in the entry form).

The Theme for the photo contest is Striving for a Sustainable Future.

Each entry must comply with the following requirements (the "Photograph Requirements"):

Photographs must be in digital format. Only online entries will be eligible. No print or film submissions will be accepted for entry into this Contest. The photograph need not be taken with a digital camera; scans of negatives, transparencies, or photographic prints are acceptable. All digital files must be 5 megabytes or smaller, must be in JPEG or JPG format, and must be at least 1,600 pixels wide (if a horizontal image) or 1,600 pixels tall (if a vertical image).

Photographs must have been taken within one (1) year before the date of entry. Minor burning, dodging and/or color correction is not acceptable. Any changes to the original Photograph are unacceptable and will render the Photograph ineligible.

The photograph, in its entirety, must be a single work of original material taken by the Contest entrant. By entering the Contest, entrant represents, acknowledges, and warrants that the submitted photograph is an original work created solely by the entrant, that the photograph does not infringe on the copyrights, trademarks, moral rights, rights of privacy/publicity or intellectual property rights of any person or entity, and that no other party has any right, title, claim, or interest in the photograph.

The photograph must not, in the sole and unfettered discretion of the USIEF Mumbai Center, contain obscene, provocative, defamatory, sexually explicit, or otherwise objectionable or inappropriate content.

CONTEST WINNERS

Potential winners shall be required to submit proof of birth date and proof of residency in Western India by November 12, 2010. Failure to deliver any required documents to by the specified deadline may result in disqualification from the Contest, and selection of an alternate potential winner.

WINNERS

Three prizes will be announced. The prize-winners will get book vouchers from Strand Book Stall, Mumbai worth Rs. 2000/-, Rs. 1000/-, and Rs. 500/- for the first, second and third prizes respectively.

LIMITATION OF LIABILITY

By entering this Contest, all entrants agree to release, discharge, and hold harmless USIEF Mumbai and other USIEF offices and their employees, officers, directors, and representatives from any claims, losses, and damages arising out of their participation in this Contest or any Contest-related activities.

USIEF Mumbai assumes no responsibility for any error, omission, interruption, deletion, defect, or delay in operation or transmission; communications line failure; theft or destruction of or unauthorized access to Contest entries or entry forms; or alteration of entries or entry forms. USIEF Mumbai not responsible for any problems with or technical malfunction of any telephone network or lines, computer online systems, servers or providers, computer equipment, software, failure of any email entry to be received on account of technical problems or traffic congestion on the Internet or at any website, human errors of any kind, or any combination thereof, including any injury or damage to entrants' or any other persons' computers related to or resulting from participation, uploading or downloading of any materials related to in this Contest.

CONDITIONS

To the extent permitted by law, the right to litigate, to seek injunctive relief or to make any other recourse to judicial or any other procedure in case of disputes or claims resulting from or on connection with this Contest are hereby excluded and any entrant expressly waives any and all such rights. Certain restrictions may apply. Entries void if the Sponsor determines the photograph to not be an original, or if the entries are illegible, incomplete, damaged, irregular, altered, counterfeit, produced in error or obtained through fraud or theft.

By entering, entrants also agree (a) to be bound by these Official Rules; (b) that the decisions of the Judges are final and binding with respect to all matters relating to the Contest; and (c) if the entrant wins that Sponsor may use the winning photographs and each winner's name, photograph, likeness, and/or voice in any publicity or advertising relating to the Contest or future promotions without compensation or approval (except where prohibited by law). In the event that the selected winner(s) of any prize is/are ineligible, cannot be traced or does/do not respond within November 12, 2010, or refuses the prize, the prize will be forfeited and USIEF Mumbai, in its sole discretion, may choose whether to award the prize to another entrant.

The Sponsor reserves the right to verify the validity and originality of any entry and/or entrant (including an entrant's identity and address) and to disqualify any entrant who submits an entry that is not in accordance with these Official Rules or who tampers with the entry process. Failure by the Sponsor to enforce any of its rights at any stage does not constitute a waiver of those rights.

RIGHT TO CANCEL OR SUSPEND CONTEST

If for any reason the Contest is not capable of running as planned, due to infection by computer virus, bugs, worms, trojan horses, denial of service attacks, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures, or any other causes beyond the control of USIEF Mumbai that corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity, or proper conduct of this Contest, USIEF Mumbai reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to disqualify any individual(s) who tamper with the entry process, and/or to cancel, terminate, modify, or suspend the Contest.

DATA PRIVACY

Entrants agree that personal data, especially name and address, may be processed, shared, and otherwise used for the purposes and within the context of the Contest and any other purposes outlined in these Official Rules. The data may also be used by the Sponsor in order to verify the participant's identity, postal address, and telephone number or to otherwise verify the participant's eligibility to participate in the Contest.

Fulbright-Nehru Environmental Leadership Program

Fulbright-Nehru Environmental Leadership Program (FNELP) fellowships are designed for mid-level Indian environment professionals in public / private sector or non-governmental organizations for up to four months. The program will combine short-term practical training / internship with opportunities for networking with American counterpart organizations. Selected fellows will be placed at US environmental public / private or non-governmental organizations, academic institutions or research centers and environment related government agencies. Fellows will be expected to explore future linkages between Indian and American organizations with common agendas.

Key areas of the FNELP initiative would include, but not be limited to:
-- Environmental Information/Systems Reporting: industry-government-NGO partnerships and exchange, environmental journalism and television, public participation in perceptions of the environment and environmental benchmarking.
-- Environmental Education: syllabus and curriculum development, instructional media including computers and internet, public advocacy and community-based campaigning, environmental awareness, information and action, environmental documentation, website and database management.
-- Environmental Policy, Regulations and Law: economic incentives for environmental conservation, energy taxes, design of environmental regulation and enforcement, environmental economics, environmental aid, environmental law, rights and institutions, stakeholder involvement in environmental policy making, the role of local government, ecosystem governance.
-- Environmental Sciences and Toxicology: biochemical mechanism of toxicity, toxicant effect on ecosystems, effects of toxics on biotic and abiotic environment, immunotoxicology, test method and guidelines for environmental variables, failure investigation and industrial problem solving.
-- Environmental Management: environment impact assessment, audits and monitoring, environmental modelling, technology assessment and development, environment management systems, life cycle assessment, pollution prevention, technology transfer and issues of global importance.

Grant Benefits:
The fellowships provide round-trip economy class air travel from India to the U.S., a monthly stipend, Accident and Sickness Program for Exchanges per U.S. Government guidelines, modest settling in allowance and a professional allowance. No allowance or travel is provided for dependents and the stipend provided under the grant is not sufficient to support family members. Scholars with accompanying dependents must have adequate personal funds to support their stay in the U.S.

Eligibility Requirements:
In addition to the General Prerequisites *, the applicant should:
-- preferably have a master's or a professional degree of at least four years duration;
-- have at least five years of professional experience in the respective field; and
-- preferably be 50 years of age or under.

Special attention will be given to applicants who demonstrate involvement in cooperative efforts between academia, research institutions, government, industry and non-governmental organizations to make practical contributions to environmental policies and programs.

The applicant should:
-- be a responsible Indian citizen who can contribute to a full and fair picture of the culture and civilization of India, and thereby help to promote understanding and friendship between the peoples of the United States of America and India;
-- have a high level of academic/professional achievement;
-- demonstrate proficiency in the English language to undertake the proposed project/program and adjust to life in the U.S. The applicant may be required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL);
-- be present in India at the time of submitting the application and for the interview (if required);
-- be eligible for leave, if employed;
-- be in good health;
-- not be residing in the United States;
-- not be applying for or holding permanent residence (green card) in the United States;
-- not have been in the U.S. during the past three years on a teaching, research, study or professional assignment for a continuous period of three months or more, at the time of submitting the application; and
-- should give an undertaking to return to India on the completion of the fellowship.

The International Leaders in Education Program (ILEP) is a program of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State, and is implemented by IREX (the International Research & Exchanges Board), a Washington, DC based non-profit organization. The International Leaders in Education Program (ILEP) provides international teachers with unique opportunities to develop expertise in their subject areas, enhance their teaching skills and increase their knowledge about the United States.

ILEP will consist of a semester-long academic program at a U.S. university, including coursework and intensive training in teaching methodologies, lesson planning, teaching strategies for their home environment, teacher leadership, as well as the use of computers for Internet, word processing and as tools for teaching. The semester-long program, which will commence in January 2011 and conclude in May 2011, will also include an internship at a secondary school to engage participants actively with the American teachers and students.

The fellowship provides:
• J-1 visa support;
• A pre-departure orientation held in participant’s home country;
• Round-trip airfare to and within the U.S.;
• A Welcome Orientation in Washington, D.C.;
• Academic program fees;
• Housing (generally shared with other program fellows);
• Accident and sickness insurance;
• A daily allowance for meals and incidentals during the university academic program;
• A book/professional development allowance;
• A Closing Seminar in Washington, D.C.;
• An excess baggage/shipping allowance; and
• The opportunity to apply for collaborative grants with U.S. colleagues.

Eligible applicants must:
• Be secondary-level (9-12 grade), full-time teachers with five or more years of classroom experience in disciplines including:
** English as a Foreign Language;
** Social Sciences (Social Studies, Civics, History, Economics or Geography);
** Mathematics; or
** Science.
• Live and teach in the states of Goa, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Maharashtra and all Union
Territories in the West
• Be citizens of India and be present in India at the time of submitting the application and for the interview;
• Be proficient in written and spoken English. Selected candidates will have to appear for a TOEFL test with a score of 500 or higher.

Starting college is your time to move away from home, but the location of your dream school may have unexpected costs.

Not all campus locations are created equally. How far your dollar will stretch could depend on the cost of living at your college’s location. For example, the cost-of-living calculator on Salary.com shows that living in San Francisco, costs 93.3 percent more than living in Cedar Falls, Iowa, home to the University of Northern Iowa. That impacts everything from the price of printer paper to how expensive pizza is. An online cost-of-living calculator is a useful tool to help you compare how much different college locations will set you back.

Cost of living is especially important to consider if you plan to live off campus during college. Rentnet.com reports that the average price for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $2,788, while the average price for a one-bedroom apartment in Tampa is $623. That difference in rent could pay for your textbooks (and then some).

Many colleges only have enough housing to accommodate a portion of their students. Research the housing policies of schools you are interested in so that you’re not surprised by the cost of having to rent an apartment for yuor second year. San Francisco State University (SFSU), for example, has limited on-campus housing options that are reserved on a first-come, first-served basis. Only SFSU freshmen under the age of 20 are guaranteed a dorm room. If you don’t meet those criteria, you may be on your own.

Another cost to keep in mind while evaluating college locations is sales tax. If you attend Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon, where there is no state or city sales tax, you’ll never have to pay more than the sticker price. Students at the University of Chicago, however, need to pony up an extra 9 percent to cover the tax on their purchases. Nine percent may not seem like a big number, but if you spend $750 on textbooks over the course of a year in Portland, add on another $67.50 to get those same items in Chicago. Price tags don’t always show how much you’ll end up paying.

The cost of being a student is not all buying printer paper and paying rent. Between exams and term papers, you’ll probably squeeze in some fun. Take a look at how much different entertainment options will cost. Are you a movie buff? A night out watching movies and eating pizza will cost over two dollars more in Los Angeles than the same ticket in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Into tennis? New tennis balls and an orange juice after the match will set you back $7 in Boston but only $5 in Miami.

In general, living expenses tend to be highest in California and in the Northeast. Costs of living in the South or the Midwest are usually lower. Conventional wisdom implies that cities are more expensive places to live than small towns or the country. While this often holds true, many medium- and small-sized cities have their share of bargains. According to Bankrate.com, if you attend the University of Connecticut in Stamford, Connecticut, you’ll pay an average of $1.44 for a loaf of bread. In Austin, where the University of Texas is located, a loaf of bread costs an average of $.74. Austin may be five times the size of Stamford, but living there can cost you significantly less. Don’t assume that prices will go up along with a city’s population.

Before you pack up and move, tally up the prices of things like groceries, entertainment, laundry, public transportation and sales tax of your new home. There’s more to your college expenses than tuition alone. If you know where you want to go to school, research the cost of living there as well.

Experience of a USIEF Mumbai Member studying at SUNY Buffalo, New York:--

I have come to US for my MS in Biotechnology at the SUNY, Buffalo this fall. Coming to US for higher studies had been my dream since I was in school and in August this year (2009), the dream came true.

Little did I know what experiences were awaiting me. I had not anticipated most things before coming to US. I was not well prepared. I had a tough time adjusting to everything here from the (way too different) education system, weather conditions (gets so gloomy in cold weather), interactions with people (formal environment), living independently (managing a household) and a systematized and organized approach to everything that one needs to follow. Not to forget staying away from home, family, close friends was just adding to this huge transition phase.

I had a difficult time understanding ways to tackle academics and managing so many different tasks like studying, cooking, cleaning, shopping, handling monetary restrictions etc.
But nonetheless I continued to strive and find help from people around. I made myself believe that I need to learn something new here every single day. I was in the process of not only making adjustments but also learning new stuff. Also, something that I appreciate here is how quick and efficiently the system works unlike in India.

I am sure there's lots more to learn in terms of experiences here and I am hopeful and positive that they would be nice ones. :)

Dealing with US Uni Admits / Denials

Those of you who have admits / denials from US Universities, just come in and share your thoughts and feelings -- on getting admitted, being waitlisted, or getting denied.

And do read the article below by Dr. Martin, author of Road Map for Graduate Study: A Guide for Prospective Graduate Students.

Responding to the notification decision, whether waitlisted, denied or admitted--

You will most likely receive one of three decisions from the admissions committee:
1) Being placed on a waiting list;
2) Denial;
3) Admission.

What follows are some of the tips for responding to each of these decisions. A complete list of tips can be found in my book, Road Map for Graduate Study – for more information, please see comments at the end of this article.

1. Waitlisted – In some ways, this is the hardest initial decision – you still don’t know anything one way or the other. But don’t despair. Accept this decision, and consider doing the following:

1. Don’t take it personally. This is so much easier to say than to do. No one likes to be told they have been put on a waiting list. Most likely, this means that while you have some very strong credentials, you were not considered to be as competitive as those being offered admission. However, the good news is that you were not denied. There is still a chance, and from my experience, in most cases, a very good chance you will be admitted.

2. Don’t assume you are going to be denied. As I just mentioned, most likely the opposite is true. If you stay calm, confident and patient, you will most likely get more encouraging news down the road.

3. Make sure you follow instructions. Once again, be professional and do what is suggested or asked of you. If you do not receive any information about what to do next, ask. Don’t demand, complain or argue. Just ask if there is anything you can do. If you are told no, accept that and do not do anything. It may tell you something about this institution if they do not provide you an opportunity to further address your interest in their program. If you are given specific instructions on what you can do, follow every one of them.

2. Denied – This is never easy. After all of the time and work you have put in to your application, it can feel like a real slap in the face. If you are extremely upset, do not react by phone or in writing right away. Give it a few days. As you reflect, consider the following:

1. Accept the decision. At this point you cannot change it.

2. Don’t take it personally. Remember, under most circumstances the admissions committee is faced with a very difficult task: choosing a limited enrollment number from among a very large applicant pool. These individuals are good people, who are doing their best in a very difficult situation. Believe me, they are not personally against you in any way.

3. Write a thank you note to the person who signed your notification letter. If you believe you can honestly do so, send a letter thanking the admissions director for taking the time to review your application. Perhaps that is all you will decide to do.

4. If you believe something was missed or overlooked, ask about it. Kindly ask if your most recent test score was received or if a recent transcript is in your file. You may want to verify that all of your recommendation letters were received. If you sent a cover letter and it contained some very important information, check to be sure it was included when your application was read. On occasion something may have been overlooked. If so, most admissions committees will provide another complete evaluation. If they are unwilling to do so, or worse yet, not even willing to take another look at that part of your application, perhaps you are getting additional information about whether this is really the place for you.

5. This is a practice opportunity for patience and professionalism. If you decide to respond in some way to being denied, please remember this: If you want to send a positive message to the admissions committee, it is now. A mature, thoughtful attitude makes a huge and positive impression, believe me!

**I completely empathize with those who are denied admission. My first application to the doctoral program on the top of my list was denied. I was extremely disappointed and somewhat angry. So I waited a few days and then called the admissions office. I learned that my most recent standardized test score was not in my file. Also, I was told that an assessment of my academic skills did not come through in my letters of recommendation. I asked if I could send the updated test score and provide another recommendation letter. They said yes. I did so and one month later was accepted. I was even awarded one full year of coursework. I realize this may not be the outcome every time, but you never know.

3. Admitted – WAY TO GO!! You did it! Your hard work has paid off. You still have lots of decisions ahead, but for now, take some time off - go and celebrate!!! Once you have “recuperated” from the euphoria, here are some next steps to consider:

1. Thank those who helped you (family, friends, recommenders, interviewer, etc.). While you did the lion’s share of the work, there are others who helped with your application and/or gave you lots of encouragement and support along the way. This may be especially true if you were initially waitlisted. Be sure to thank these individuals.

2. Send a thank you note to the person who signed your notification letter. This goes a long way. The admissions committee works very hard too, and it is always nice to remember to say thanks to them.

3. Read the materials you start receiving. They will contain important information about your enrollment deposit, financial aid, housing, admitted student visit programs, course scheduling, new student orientation, student life and much more. Hold on to this information and read it carefully.

4. Start/continue talking with other admits, current students and alumni. By now you may have established contact with current or former students. You may even know others who, like yourself, have just been admitted. Reach out to these individuals. You can learn a lot from current and/or former students. You can learn a lot from future classmates as well. Knowing some of your student colleagues before you enroll is always helpful. Compare notes with them. Get their impressions of the application process you have just been through, and also of the admitted student follow-up you have been receiving so far.

TIP: Take the initiative to meet classmates through Facebook and pre-orientation programs or other social networks before classes start.

5. Try to schedule a campus visit if your visa status or travel schedule allows it. Here is a good tip: If you really want to get an idea of what the institution is like, make an unannounced visit. One advantage is no one knows you are coming, and you will experience things as they really are. One disadvantage is that you will not be able to schedule appointments you might want ahead of time.

6. Evaluate how you are treated post admission/deposit. As a prospective student you were in the driver’s seat when deciding where you would apply. Once you submitted your application(s), you gave the wheel to the institution/admissions committee. Now that you have been admitted, you are once again in the driver’s seat. You get to decide whether to accept the offer. This is a very good time to evaluate how you are treated. Does the admitted student follow-up process make you feel wanted, included and well informed? If so, great. If not, perhaps you need to think more seriously about enrollment in the program.

7. Do some comparison shopping. Remember the spreadsheet you started when initially investigating various graduate school options? Now is a good time to expand it or create a new spreadsheet. You might use the following as some of your evaluation questions:

1) How soon after I was admitted did I receive another contact from the institution?
2) Did a student or alumnus call me to offer congratulations and to offer help?
3) How often am I being contacted? It is too much? Too little?
4) How long did it take me to get an estimated annual budget?
5) Will I receive financial aid? If so, what type? Scholarships? Fellowships? Loans? Work Study? Graduate Assistantship? Stipend?
6) How much information am I receiving about courses/program of study?
7) What did I think of my campus visit post admission?
8) How friendly/helpful have the faculty, staff and students been since I was admitted?
9) Is the information I am receiving really helpful to me?
10) If I am coming with a spouse or partner, or with a family, how accommodating/inclusive is the institution?

As you did before, put the names of the institutions to which you have been admitted on the left hand column of your spreadsheet and your various evaluation questions across the top. Give each institution a grade. You will start seeing some themes emerge as you do this.

**Please read the material sent to you or referred to on the web. It is extremely frustrating to prepare information for incoming students, only to have them disregard it, asking questions they could easily have answered for themselves. If you have suggestions about the way in which information is prepared or provided, definitely share those. Be careful not to create negative impressions of yourself by appearing inept at getting readily available information that has already been communicated.

The United States-India Educational Foundation (USIEF), the Fulbright Commission in India, is pleased to announce a new round of fellowship competitions open to Indian citizens for 2010-2011. In addition to providing opportunities for personal, academic and professional growth, Fulbright-Nehru and other exchanges promote mutual understanding between the people of the US and India. This brochure describes the fellowships, eligibility criteria, and procedures for applying.

Once you find a fellowship of interest, I suggest that you visit the current fellows page on USIEF's website to learn about recent proposals that have been successful. I also encourage you to talk with Fulbright and other alumni about their experiences in the United States. USIEF staff and our website alumni page can help you to get in touch with people in your field who will be glad to answer questions. Screening and selection committees look for talented individuals whose projects are important to India and the US and who have the ability to be good "cultural ambassadors." Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant Program

The United States-India Educational Foundation (USIEF) invites applications from interested Indian nationals, between 21 and 29 years of age, currently teaching English at college level or training to be teachers of English for the FULBRIGHT FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING ASSISTANT (FLTA) PROGRAM. Applicants should POSSESS BY JUNE 2010 at least a Master's degree. Selected FLTAs from India will teach Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, or Urdu at select U.S. campuses during their nine month non degree grant beginning August/September 2009, subject to availability of funding. Application deadline for Indian candidates: July 15, 2009.

The FLTA Program

The FLTA Program, an integral part of the Fulbright Student Program, is funded by the US Department of State. The purpose of the FLTA Program is to strengthen foreign language instruction at U.S. colleges and universities, and some high schools, while providing future foreign teachers of English with the opportunity to refine their skills, increase their English language proficiency and extend their knowledge of U.S society and culture. FLTA fellows spend nine months serving as teaching assistants at U.S. educational institutions while also taking courses in English teaching and U.S. Studies as non-degree students. FLTA fellows also interact with the host community in conversation groups, extracurricular activities and community outreach projects. India is one of the countries participating in the 2010 competition.

The FLTA program promotes cross-cultural understanding in the U.S. and in the home countries of the FLTA fellows. U.S. universities benefit from the presence of a native speaker on their campuses. FLTA fellows provide teaching assistance, by serving in various capacities, which may include teaching up to two classes per semester, and typically facilitate cultural events, language clubs and language tables. FLTA fellows are required to enroll in at least two courses per semester, one of which must be in U.S. Studies. The remaining coursework must relate to their careers in English language teaching. Fellows and U.S. students have a unique opportunity to learn about each other's cultures and customs, and to build mutual understanding between the U.S. and other countries. Upon completion of the program, the fellows return home and teach English at the secondary and university level. As a result of the program, FLTA alumni return with a high proficiency in English and are able to speak with authenticity and authority about the United States, its values and its people.

Grant Benefits

All FLTA fellows receive a monthly stipend, health insurance and travel support. U.S. host institutions provide tuition awards to support the required coursework. The FLTA program does not provide J-2 visas for spouses or dependents.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:

Be citizens of India and hold a valid Indian passport at the time of application. Persons applying for or holding permanent residence in the United States are not eligible. Fulbright fellows enter the U.S. on an exchange visitor (J-1) visa and are subject to the two-year home residence requirement associated with J-1 visa. Applicants must be residing in India throughout the application, nomination and selection process.

FLTA applicants must be at least 21 years old and no more than 29 years of age on October 1, 2009.
*
Applicants must clearly demonstrate maturity, dependability, integrity and professionalism.
*
Fluency in English is mandatory. A score of no less than 213 (CBT), 79-80 (IBT) or 550 (PBT) on the TOEFL is required.
*
Candidates should possess the equivalent of a U.S. Bachelors degree with a good academic record. Indian applicants should have at least a Masters degree by June 2010.
*
Applicants must be English language teachers at the college level or training to become English language teachers.
*
Prior teaching experience is preferred.

Important: The FLTA Program is a NON-DEGREE program and those wishing to pursue degree studies in the United States should not apply. All FLTA fellows must return to their home countries upon completion of the nine-month program. No extension requests will be supported. No dependents are allowed to accompany fellows on this program. Pregnant candidates may not participate in this program if the birth is due during the program period.

FLTA Applicant Profile

FLTA candidates must be enthusiastic about teaching. They must have a sincere interest in teaching their native language and culture to U.S. students. Through their application they should demonstrate knowledge of their culture and current events in their home country. They should have leadership skills, the ability to motivate students to learn and the ability to relate to them in an emphatic manner. FLTAs should have a desire to meet people and become a part of the community by participating in community events and campus activities. They should also be creative and self reliant team players, who are able to maintain excellent relationships with faculty, staff and students.

Preference is given to those candidates who have little or no prior experience living in the United States. Fellows must be flexible with placements at smaller or more ethnically diverse U.S. academic institutions.

There are separate instructions for each format; however, all applicants must complete the Fulbright FLTA application form and send along with the required enclosures to USIEF, Fulbright House, 12 Hailey Road, New Delhi 110001, no later than July 15, 2009. Do not send paper applications directly to the Institute of International Education (IIE). The letters of reference should be sent directly to USIEF on the prescribed Confidential Letter of Reference forms, by the same date. Employed applicants need to submit their applications through proper channel by the July 15 deadline. Please write ATTN: FLTA Program on the envelope.

Review Process

All eligible applications will be screened. Short-listed applicants will have to appear for an interview before a selection committee in New Delhi, in August 2009. Candidates recommended by the selection committee will have to appear for the TOEFL in August/September 2009. USIEF will provide fee vouchers towards the TOEFL exam. Recommended candidates will have to complete an online version of the application form. Applications of recommended candidates will be forwarded to the US for further review. CANDIDATES WILL BE NOTIFIED OF THEIR AWARDS BY March 2010. The final selection is dependent on the ability to match requests of U.S. host institution with language skills of the candidates. FLTA participants will be required to attend an orientation during the summer of 2010 before arriving at their host institutions in August 2010. FLTA fellows will also be required to attend a mid-year enrichment workshop to share and discuss foreign language best practices and their current teaching experience with other FLTA fellows.

An Indian Students Biography

-- Mishri Someshwar, an Indian from the garden city of Bangalore, studied at the American University in Washington DC, and is currently employed with the National Society of Collegiate Scholars in Washington D.C. Below is a short biography in her own words.

“I grew up in Bangalore, India and went to American University in Washington, D.C. I studied journalism in college and graduated in 2007. I currently live in Silver Spring, Maryland, just outside of Washington, D.C.

I work in the city (Washington) as a communications coordinator. My job is writing press releases, updating my company’s website, working on a magazine that we put out every 3 months. In general just doing a lot of stuff related to what I studied in college, which was writing and editing.

The reason I came to study in the U.S. was because my father was very keen about me studying here. He thought it would be a great opportunity and a great experience. I was very scared and didn’t want to do it but I did and I’m so glad that I did because it was probably the best thing I have ever done.

I’m really passionate about helping other international students transition to the U.S. and have a good experience because I think it can really change your life and make it better.

I am also really passionate about politics. If you know me you will know my political opinions very quickly!

I think that if you have to visit one place while you are here in the United States you should go to the Lincoln Memorial. It’s such a beautiful monument to America’s greatest president and one of the greatest world leaders in modern history. Take the time to really read the words and think about what he thought about life and country and freedom, all of those great values that we all hear about but don’t think about too deeply.

One thing you should try while you are here in the U.S. is making sure you attend Thanksgiving at someone’s house. Thanksgiving is a U.S. festival, its held in the end of November and it is a celebration of family and gratitude for every good thing that you have had that year. Its a great opportunity to meet a lot of people, to eat some very traditional American food, which is interesting like turkey and pumpkin pie and things that I have never had before I came here. That was a wonderful experience for me and something that I think you will enjoy as well!”

Steps for Shortlisting Universities -- Graduate Programs

First, and most important, DECIDE on the program you want to go in for. Be SPECIFIC. For example: If you want to get into Biomed Engineering you should realize that that is too vast a subject at the MS level. Hence, you should figure out if you want to study genomics and biosciences, which will be lab/research-oriented; or go in for entrepreneurial biotech and biotech management, which are business fields.

After your academic goals are set, your search will be clear. So, take a deep breath and smile!

Consider the following steps to SHORTLIST Universities:--

1. Use the EducationUSA search engine to find programs/universities. The more fields you specify, the narrower the results will be. You can search based on the program of your choice, location, and fee structure.

2. Research every single search resulting university's website, program profile, courses offered, professors and their research. Ask yourself if the University, program, location, tuition, living expenses, climate, and any other considerations you deem important, meet your needs i.e. DOES THE UNIVERSITY FIT YOU?, and more importantly, DO YOU FIT INTO THE UNIVERSITY?

Adviser: "Check if the department is strong in your field. If two out of ten professors are doing the research you want to do then that may not be a good choice for you... but if you find places where at least 4-6 faculty members do what you want to do, then that’s a college you should shortlist."

Student: "Check every professor's profile??"

Adviser: "Yes! It’s a make-or-break decision of your life. Short-listing demands a LOT of time, be ready to invest that."

Student: "How do I get informed about the professors??"

Adviser: "Each university website will have a "Faculty & Staff" page which has not only the professors listed on there, but also their research projects, their recent publications, the classes they teach, and the kind of projects their graduate assistants are working on."

3. Go through the Past Profiles of students at the USIEF Reference Library. We have collected all this data for the past 7 years so you can mark some trends with universities.

4. After the list is shorter, meet your educational adviser, who will help you categorize your list of Universities as “ambitious, moderate, safe”.
